Job Title Java Software Developer
Company Virtual Doxx Corporation
Company Website www.virtualdoxx.com
Summary Virtual Doxx Corporation is a small but well-established startup, entering our 5th year in business.

VirtualDoxx is a successful commercial item tracking system written in Java, with EJB 2.1, JSPs, JBoss, MySQL database, and a Swing client.

The entire server stack is Open Source. VirtualDoxx is cross platform, running on multiple Linux distros, Windows, and Solaris.

VirtualDoxx software is used by hundreds of customers to identify, label, and track the physical location of items including records (file folders), assets, weapons, gear, and essentially any type of item with a serial number or other unique identifier. Using VirtualDoxx and RFID tags, customers can find items they can not see! And they can track the movement of items passively, as they move through RFID-enabled doorways.

Because tracking physical location is so critical for these items, new technologies are increasingly important:

- RFID - radio frequency identification tags that can be read from a distance
- RFID readers that show speed and distance
- Sensors, including photo eyes and proximity sensors
- GPS
- portable tracking devices

We are looking for a Java software developer with wide-ranging technical interests who can work independently on a wide range of projects, driven by customer requirements. This job is a combination of R&D, software development, customer support, software configuration, and system administration.

This is a key hire for Virtual Doxx Corporation and we hope to find a candidate with long-term interest in growing the company.

The core technical skills we are looking for include Java and Linux. Knowledge of JBoss and EJB3 would be a major advantage. We are interested in a person who can evolve and expand to meet new requirements.

We have already evolved the product in many ways:
- from individual servers to VMs
- implemented svn, trac, and drupal for internal infrastructure
- upgraded the build to include a cross platform installer
- trial conversion to EJB3

But there are many projects remaining:
- complete the EJB3 conversion
- multiple databases - Oracle, MS SQL server
- new Web 2.0 front-end, possibly in Ruby

Job duties include:
- learn the application and all technical aspects
- develop and support the VirtualDoxx Java application
- learn how to use multiple types of RFID readers
- configure servers deployed at customer sites - Linux and Windows
- incorporate new technologies into our software products
- EJB3
- RFID hardware and software
- new Ruby front-end
- Virtualization - VM support on Linux (KVM) and Windows
- LDAP for integration with Windows Active Directory
- customer support for implementations and questions

We are truly a virtual corporation with employees in Cary and Maryland. This is NOT an office job. You should be a self-motivated individual who can work independently out of your home office. We have no interest in micro-managing your work, but we will ask you to do a wide variety of tasks, with as much coaching as required.

Limited travel may be required to support customers.

We offer competitive compensation.
